I {heart} snow days?

project life freebies

It was a snow day yesterday. The first snow day of the school year. I was all excited until 10 a.m. when the fighting started. Fighting. Over. Markers. {sigh.}

And, the forecast had everyone scared we were going to get 14″ of snow that the school districts cancelled school before even one snowflake hit the ground. Um, yeah, we got about 6.5″. That is a waste of a good snow day.

Did you see Scary Mommy on the Today Show this morning? I’ve been reading her blog for a few years. She is hilarious!

Me and my big mouth…

Charlie the Betta had a little accident that led to his untimely death. It wasn’t my fault, even though I was the person to clean the tank the day before. Alex even absolved me of all fault, but she still wanted me to replace it.

We were looking at the Bettas at Petco when it happened. Without thinking things through I opened my big mouth: “You should get a hermit crab then I won’t have to clean the fish tank.”

Little did I know how much it would cost me when she proclaimed that an excellent idea! I don’t even want to say how much. Too much for a little crab. Good thing he (or she) is way cool!

If you have been keeping count (like you would?)…that’s 1 hermit crab, 1 Betta Fish (Parker’s), 2 mice, and 2 dogs.

Parker’s Kindergarten teacher is so amazing! She has a way of getting the kids excited about learning. Her teacher takes pictures every few days and sends them out to parents.

Alex’s Science project of a cell model is made of $14 in candy. This girl loves science. That is why she was so upset this week when she received her report card with a C in science. It’s her only C.

Project Life | Feb. Week 4

Snow day? No such luck kids. The snow came on Sunday.

My awesome neighbor snow blowing our driveway and sidewalk.

We have a snow blower but my neighbor beat me to the snow! He is so nice (and I think he really likes to use his snow blower.)

Still in her pjs from last night’s birthday party sleepover.

stuffed animals

Ready for bed…all of us!

Parker has no less than 25 stuffed animals piled on her bed under the blankets. I know because I counted them.

My girls love stuffed animals. How many stuffed animals does one kid need?

I used to discourage them from getting stuffed animals, but now I am afraid my discouragement will twist their brain-thinking in some warped way and I will turn them into hoarders. Stuffed animal hoarders.

Rocco brought Thor’s stuffed animal to me to play.

I am a mother of a tween

Today my first born is 11-years-old. Geez, how did I get to be a mother of a tween? It may be cliché but, seriously?

Alex at 11

It’s good to be eleven!

Her birthday cake of choice: Angel Food Cake (high altitude recipe here)

Ever try to bake an Angel Food Cake from scratch? It is a high maintenance cake. And hell if you don’t whip the meringue into submission you’ll end up with a flat, dense cake. Try number one was a bit dense but tasty.

I turned to YouTube for tips because I was going to figure this out! Why can’t I bake a “simple” Angel Food Cake? I had to dig out my stand mixer that I hadn’t used in so long it had a thick layer of dust had formed. Try number two was perfect! I was doing my happy dance in the kitchen. And then…disaster. I had a little cake-fall-out-of-the-pan mishap.

Try number three? Two words: King Soopers. I fought the cake and the cake won.

We added a little glaze to the store bought cake…yum

Eleven is a big deal. It’s the end of elementary school. Next year is middle school, which I hear is scary, for her and me. She is becoming a young lady. There are so many things I want her to remember. Like, when things get tough: this is only a moment. It won’ last forever. Or, the interests and hobbies you have today will be different next week, next year, 5 years from now. It’s okay to explore everything that interests you.

It is things like that that prompted my gift to her.

Eleven things you need to know at eleven

  8. Learn to bake (especially Angel Food Cake)
  9. Friendship and popularity are not the same thing
  10. Love your sister

  12. And one to grow on…When in doubt, pray!

#7 Don’t be afraid to be smart

With each “thing to know” I added my own journaling, or pearls of motherly wisdom, for Alexandra. This is totally a book she will keep forever in her hoard.

#9 Friendship and popularity are not the same thing

She is constantly leaving me little “love notes” on my iPhone or iPad’s Notepad app. I hope she doesn’t stop doing that.

#1 I love YOU

She is such a great kid with a big future ahead of her. I love seeing the lady she is becoming.

Project Life | Week Four

Finally! It’s snowing. I have the flu but I couldn’t resist take a few quick shots of the snow on the way to drop the kids off at school this morning. Would you say that is dedication or an illness?
