How to Make Cupcake Ornaments

I have to apologize for the late Christmas ornament post, but we made three dozen of these cupcake ornament with everyone on our gift-giving list getting one (or two). I didn’t want to spoil the surprise for those gift-receivers.

how to make cupcake ornaments, super cute, fun and easy!

CUPCAKE ORNAMENTS HOW TO | These are super easy to make. You will need a tub of Drywallk Compound at your local hardware store, hot glue, ornaments (glass or plastic), cupcake wrappers, red jingle bells, small glass beads (found in the jewelry isle) and a pastry bag.

Cute in any color

Hot glue the bottom of the ornament into a cupcake liner. Load the drywall compound into the pastry bag like you would frosting. “Frost” the ornament like a cupcake. Use a plastic spoon to smooth out the compound a bit. Sprinkle with beads, add a jingle bell cherry.

I like the glitter the best

Place the ornaments in cupcake tins to let dry overnight. Once the compound hardens you can add a cute hook.

Alexandra and I did the frosting of the ornaments. Parker was in charge of the sprinkles and cherry jingle bell. That is the perfect “job” for little hands who really want to help but can’t manage the frosting without getting it all over your table, and themselves!

Quick Food Gift: Christmas Crunch Recipe

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON | I’ve wrote how I am not  in the mood for the holidays this year. I am not a Grinch, I am just not feeling it.

I know I am not alone. Right? Anybody?

I have given myself a hall pass this year. I don’t have to host a cookie decorating party. I don’t have to over-decorate my house and take pictures that are Pin-worthy.

I think Pin-worthy should be added to the dictionary.

The same goes for baking, Advent calendar gifts, books creatively and neatly wrapped under the tree (’cause they’ll get peed on), or custom designed Christmas cards which involve an ill-planned photo shoot, matching envelopes and a trip to the USPS for decorative stamps. Nope. I’ve done none of it.

I am cool with it. So, stop calling me a Grinch.

But, if I  feel up to it I will make another batch of this Christmas Crunch to hand out to neighbors this weekend. If I don’t, I won’t beat myself up about it.

Christmas Crunch recipe

Christmas Crunch

QUICKIE HOW TO | Pop a large bowl of plain popcorn. I use the popcorn that comes in a jar, pour some in a brown paper lunch bag, close bag and use the “popcorn” setting in the microwave until you don’t hear popping noise. Melt some Almond Bark. (I used vanilla flavor, but chocolate would be yummy too.) Pour Almond Bar over popped popcorn and stir. Work quickly to keep the Almond Bark from setting up. Sprinkle in some festive sprinkles and red/green M&Ms, stir. Spread out on wax paper to let it set up. Once set, gently break apart, then package in cute bags. Hand out to friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors. Sit back and enjoy the oohs and aahs.

Something to Ponder this Weekend.

SOMETHING TO PONDER THIS WEEKEND | Recently I wrote about how our family loves the reality show Duck Dynasty, here. I typically do not write about things that would cause a fight. That is not what this blog is about. However, with the recent controversy surrounding what some are calling homo-phobic comments by the shows patriarch, Phil Robertson, to GQ Magazine, I feel I need to put my two cents into the mix.

The big question for me is whether or not Roberston expressing his religious beliefs and quoting the Bible can be labeled as Hate Speech. But first I must know: What exactly constitutes Hate Speech?

Hate Speech Law and Legal Definition: “Hate speech is a communication that carries no meaning other than the expression of hatred for some group, especially in circumstances in which the communication is likely to provoke violence. It is an incitement to hatred primarily against a group of persons defined in terms of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and the like. Hate speech can be any form of expression regarded as offensive to racial, ethnic and religious groups and other discrete minorities or to women.” {source}

Simply put, an opinion (religious, personal, or otherwise), other than your own, is not Hate Speech. The statement must carry an expression of hatred to be labeled Hate Speech. You may find it to be vulgar, disgusting, repulsive, or intolerant, but that doesn’t mean the opinion/statement carries the intent of hatred.

There seems to be a fine line between personal opinion/beliefs and hate speech these days. Sometimes those lines get blurred in this social media world we live in. And, sometimes we have a knee-jerk reaction to a statement, and rush to label it or that person as racist, a bigot, or anti-whatever.

Phil Robertson was not expressing hatred of a group; he was expressing his American right to his religious beliefs. He was asked his opinion of what he believes is sinful. Like it or not, he gave it.

Never ask a question if you’re not prepared to hear the answer.

This is my opinion: Tolerance on both sides is a must. A group cannot demand tolerance from another group without showing tolerance themselves. We must be quick to love, slow to judge. In this country we still (for now) have the right to express our religious beliefs. Simply expressing what is stated in our Christian Bible is not hate speech. You don’t have to like it, but you have to allow it.

Personally, I choose to base my opinion of someone by how they treat me, strangers, their family, co-workers, etc. It is not my place to judge. I will let God sort that out. I stand behind everyone’s right in this country to speak their mind.  Whether I agree with it, or not.

Before you throw a stone at Phil Robertson with the media, read GQ the article for yourself (don’t read just the quoted excerpts, which are misleading). Then read the Robertson Family response.

Author Note: I am not defending what Robertson said, only his right to say it. Remember, just because you have the right to say it, doesn’t make it right. Hate-filled name calling does not contribute to the conversation, it only serves to fuel the fire and make you look stupid.

Pass the whine…

You know what is a real let down? Finally getting a date night with hubby, then eating a bad meal. Seriously. We eat out so little that when we finally do get a date night the meal should effing fantastic, but it wasn’t, and that sucks. I know. Boo-hoo.

Okay, enough whining…

This weekend we mustered the energy to check off one of our Christmas traditions…Holiday Lights! Last year we went to Golden, Colorado to check out their river walk lights. The girls were so impressed with the huge pine tree completely wrapped in lights that we had to share it with friends this year.

Each branch is wrapped in strands of lights. I wonder if they leave the lights on all year…hum.

Our house with lights

Our home: It may be old and worn. It may have stained carpets and pet hair. It may need a fresh coat of paint on the inside, not to mention new windows. There is not a pretty decorated Pinterest worthy fireplace mantle. Very few people I know would have house-envy upon walking into our house, but it is OUR HOME. It is full of love and happiness. And, that is all I can really ask for.

December Daily | 14

Where to begin? Yesterday, another school shooting here in Colorado. One student in critical condition, the teen shooter dead at Arapahoe High School. Today is the Sandy Hook School shooting 1 year anniversary. I had to turn off the Today Show yesterday morning. Too many tearful memories were being replayed.

I can’t seem to get into a festive mood.

  • We haven’t baked cookies. Thanks to my bestie for inviting the girls over to bake with her family.
  • We haven’t gone out to see the holiday lights (although we plan to go on Sunday).
  • I half-hearted let the girls decorate gingerbread houses, which we threw out after only a week of display because the candies were falling off, and onto the floor, then sticking to our socks when we inadvertently stepped on them.
  • Rocco peed on the Christmas tree…again. Thankfully there is nothing under the tree to get wet except the tree skirt.
  • We’ve watched only one Christmas movie. Home Alone.
  • I think the girls are disappointed in the uninspiring Advent gifts in the countdown calendar this year. Last year, I set the bar high.
  • I am not even sending out Christmas cards this year.

I am just not in the mood.

Anyone out there feeling the same way?

Parker is thinking she wants to start ice skating again. This morning we went to the Ice Centre and I had to bribe Alexandra to get on the ice with her little sister. A Starbucks Mocha Frappacinno was her prize.

Alex hasn’t skated since February of this year. Six years of skating and competing…she still can do a Spiral, but she wouldn’t even attempt a jump or spin in rental skates. She misses skating. I can tell.

****UPDATE: Claire Davis, the victim of Arapahoe High School shooting mentioned above, passed away December 21, 2013. Senseless. Her family are an example of grace and love in the unimaginable time of tragedy and heartbreak. “Last week was truly a paradox in that we lost our daughter, yet we witnessed the wonderful love that exists in the world through the tremendous outpouring of support we received,” read a statement posted by the Davis family on the hospital’s Facebook page. {source}
