Weekend Lens | August

school clothes

First day of school outfit?

Saturday was our annual back to school clothes shopping night with friends. My friend and I treat our girls (4 total) to dinner then shop til we drop…or are broke, whichever comes first. Dinner at Larkburger, then Kohl’s, Walmart and JcPenney.  The best deals of the night? JcPenney clearance rack.

Date night

Friday night the girls camped out in a friends backyard. They slept in tents and cooked over a camp fire. Hubby and I wanted no part of that. We went on a rare date night. We tried Cracovia (Polish cuisine) in Westminster. We had the platter for two, because we didn’t know what anything tasted like…delish!

Eeewwww!

She powered through it

Alexandra made me dinner tonight. She picked Chicken Toes from Rachael Ray’s cookbook. She wasn’t liking the part where you have to dip the chicken into beaten eggs. But she stuck it out and finished. We did decide that we don’t like the sweetness of this chicken (it calls for Allspice and brown sugar) and have come up with our own recipe. We’ll let you know how it turns out.

She was also on a cleaning spree today. She cleaned and organized her bedroom, her sister’s room and did her laundry. I am so lucky. There was a time when I swore she was becoming a hoarder. But not today.

Autumn Weekend…

I love autumn. I love the falling leaves, the crunch under foot, the colors & smell.

I hate the fall allergies we all seem to get. Saturday morning Parker woke up feeling sick with allergies again. She had stayed home from school on Thursday because she felt so miserable. So, I gave her some meds and we laid down on the couch. She laid on top of me and promptly fell back to sleep. Since I couldn’t move, I was forced to watch St. Elmo’s Fire. (Yes, forced!)

As a teenager I had a celebrity crush on Andrew McCarthy. Did you know he writes for Travel + Leisure magazine now? Anyhoo…

I drove the girls to meet up with friends at Chatfield Reservoir for a weekend of camping. I dropped them off, then I went back home to sleep in my own bed where I was warm and cozy. The girls love camping for some reason. Obviously they didn’t get that love from me!

Alex missed my soooo much. She texted me for half the night. Sunday, I drove back down to pick them up. Alex and I walked around Chatfield Res. The smell of the lake brought back childhood memories. There is something about the smell of a lake that is calming. She needed to spend time with me and talk. Drama.

Sparkles on the lake.

The weekend is always better with cake!

It’s a long 4-day weekend for the girls with no school on Friday and Monday. And it started with a bang!

Alex had major girl drama with her BFF. They are only 10 & 11; how much drama could there be? Hurtful words were exchanged, feelings were hurt, cell phones were taken.

Then, at parent-teacher conference I found out that this girl-drama is going on at school too. More than I knew. Nope, my little angel isn’t perfect. Now what do I do? I do know this: Being pre-teen is hard. These girls are learning how to navigate friendships and social groupings. I can’t fix it. I can only be there to listen. Guide her. And, hopefully the teacher will have that talk with them and get them straightened out. (Just kidding, mostly.)

The sad news that Jessica Ridgeway’s body was positively identified came late Friday. We all knew it and cried still. Cried for her family. Cried for the sweet girl whose life was taken too soon. Cried for our children in the neighborhood. This is too close to home and everyone has a tight rein on their kids.

Parker had her 6th birthday party at Hyland Hills Gymnastics. The kids had a blast and at only $8 a kid, I was one happy mama.

She wanted a luau too, so we ordered a beach-theme cupcake cake. Note the icing on the candle? Yeah, it broke. It was Alex’s quick thinking to “glue” it back together with icing. Smart kid!

Parker swinging off the swing into the foam pit. I wish I had a picture of hubby doing a flip off the beam into the pit! If we haven’t been married for 17 years I would have been like, “Hey, baby! Wanna go out tonight?” Instead, I held my breath in hopes that the ER wasn’t the next stop.

Blowing out the candles on her actual birthday.

Her choice for dinner: hot wings. Yummy!
