December Daily | 14

Where to begin? Yesterday, another school shooting here in Colorado. One student in critical condition, the teen shooter dead at Arapahoe High School. Today is the Sandy Hook School shooting 1 year anniversary. I had to turn off the Today Show yesterday morning. Too many tearful memories were being replayed.

I can’t seem to get into a festive mood.

  • We haven’t baked cookies. Thanks to my bestie for inviting the girls over to bake with her family.
  • We haven’t gone out to see the holiday lights (although we plan to go on Sunday).
  • I half-hearted let the girls decorate gingerbread houses, which we threw out after only a week of display because the candies were falling off, and onto the floor, then sticking to our socks when we inadvertently stepped on them.
  • Rocco peed on the Christmas tree…again. Thankfully there is nothing under the tree to get wet except the tree skirt.
  • We’ve watched only one Christmas movie. Home Alone.
  • I think the girls are disappointed in the uninspiring Advent gifts in the countdown calendar this year. Last year, I set the bar high.
  • I am not even sending out Christmas cards this year.

I am just not in the mood.

Anyone out there feeling the same way?

Parker is thinking she wants to start ice skating again. This morning we went to the Ice Centre and I had to bribe Alexandra to get on the ice with her little sister. A Starbucks Mocha Frappacinno was her prize.

Alex hasn’t skated since February of this year. Six years of skating and competing…she still can do a Spiral, but she wouldn’t even attempt a jump or spin in rental skates. She misses skating. I can tell.

****UPDATE: Claire Davis, the victim of Arapahoe High School shooting mentioned above, passed away December 21, 2013. Senseless. Her family are an example of grace and love in the unimaginable time of tragedy and heartbreak. “Last week was truly a paradox in that we lost our daughter, yet we witnessed the wonderful love that exists in the world through the tremendous outpouring of support we received,” read a statement posted by the Davis family on the hospital’s Facebook page. {source}

20 Carved Pumpkins…

carved pumpkins

Some people act surprised when they find out I don’t like to carve pumpkins for Halloween. It surprises me that they think I enjoy it.

Maybe it’s because I was scarred for life by a 4th grade teacher who made his students close our eyes while sticking our hand in a pumpkin full of slimy pumpkin guts….gross. (Or maybe it’s because I stink at it.)

This weekend a dear friend hosted a pumpkin carving party. Imagine how excited I was. My kids were excited.

Love the Red Rider wagon!

We brought 6 pumpkins; hauling them to the friend’s house in the wagon.

Six was ambitious on my part.

After carving two pumpkins myself I can now say I am a pumpkin carving convert.

See, it turned out cute! The pumpkin…and the kid!

Parker was a great helper retrieving the slimy guts.

She’s a little irritated that I am taking pictures right now.

Alex carved 3 pumpkins but would have carved 6 by herself.

Nom, nom, nom…

A zombie pumpkin….of course.

Between everyone at the party there were 20 carved pumpkins.

Pretty cool for someone who didn’t think she liked to carve pumpkins.

But, honestly, you don’t need to use the products to participate or document the magically season. Just create something.

Holiday shopping, Santa, and Turkeys

My mom was in town for the Holiday week. Love that! She lives 2 states away. The kids really loved it because she spoiled them rotten at the mall. Oh, ya she spoiled me too with a new pair of boots.

Parker sat on Santa’s lap twice, at two different malls. This is the Santa at Park Meadows Mall in Highlands Ranch.

gold studded boots

It is also were Mom and I fell in love with this pair of Michael Kors gold studded boots in the window. I bet her the boots are $250. She said, “Really? You think?” I was wrong. They are $450.  But they are beautiful!  This day we also went to IKEA, ate lunch and oohed and aahed at the kitchens.

We visited 3 Justice’s at 3 different malls. Alex was in heaven. Of course, I can’t blame her. Love the clothes in this store! But it was overload.

Parker finally shopped ’til she dropped. Me too, honey.

Alex was so ready to help prepare Thanksgiving dinner. About 4 carrots into peeling she decided it was too hard. Yay for me!

Parker lasted 1 potato… Thanksgiving is my favorite. It’s a holiday all about family and good food. Food that takes hours to prepare and only 15 minutes to devour.

December Daily | 8

This morning I got up, even though I wanted to stay in bed, and dropped Alex off at school. Then, I came home and went back to bed. Hey, don’t judge. I only stayed there for about an hour, but I still couldn’t get going this morning. So much on my to-do list and no motivation. I laid on the couch and watched The View. Finally got tired of the yelling from the ladies on the show, so I got dressed.

I just realized there is only 2 weeks until Christmas. Where have I been? Well, we’ve been dealing with Ed’s estate, two new dogs making a mess of my house, the celebration of life memorial service and laying Ed to rest. I’ve been a little preoccupied. But I am back now and feeling a little stressed. ‘Tis the season.

Selecting Christmas wrap at Target

Parker and I trekked to Target for a long list of items for the holidays. Christmas gifts for her older sister, secret Santa gift for pre-school, candy making supplies, Christmas wrapping (the blue with Santa dogs), bows, tape, warm gloves for everyone in the family, long underwear, socks, queso for a party on Saturday night, oh my! $170 later…I need a nap!

SPOILER ALERT: The postman delivered our Christmas cards from Winkflash. Now I have to address all the envelopes…I’ll just add that on my to-do list.

Cards of Christmas past here. Tonight is skate practice. It’s the last practice day before Alex’s holiday exhibition outside on Friday night. Alex wanted to Christmas shop for her little sister instead of skate. I had to check her for a fever. So, it was back to Target! I think I maybe solely supporting their stock…

The forecast is for a high of 38 degrees tomorrow night. But by 6:30 p.m. it will be much colder. That is why I bought the family warm gloves and long underwear.

Thankful Tree Centerpiece

Like a lot of families, it’s become a tradition to write out the things we are thankful for during Thanksgiving. Because my kids love crafts, they required the activity to be craft related. I demand that the craft to be E-A-S-Y. Last year we colored a stuffed blessings turkey {see it here}. This year we made a Thankful Tree.

Tree full of thanks

I cut some branches from our plum-tree in the backyard. (After the snow storm, it needed pruned anyway.) Arranged the limbs in a pretty vase with some marbles in the bottom, used foam glitter leaves from Joann’s, wrote our thanks on the back and attached with string. It is the centerpiece on our dining room table. I told it had to be easy!

Giving thanks should never be a once-a-year-thing. I am continuing to record my 1,000 Gifts (Thankfulness) until I reach that magic number. I encourage you to think about what you are thankful for and record it. For those times when you forget that you are truly blessed.
