A month of giving thanks

thanksgiving quote

Scientific research shows that giving thanks for just 3 things a day makes you 25% happier.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s the calm before the rushed craziness of December. It’s a time of family and friends. It’s a time to openly give thanks for all we have…even if you are struggling financially, have health issues, emotional problems, whatever, there is ALWAYS something to be thankful for. And, November is the perfect month to celebrate that.

November 1 : 3 gifts eaten

  1. Larmar’s chocolate donuts
  2. coffee
  3. breakfast for dinner

November 2: 3 gifts worn

  1. winter coat
  2. Halloween costumes
  3. gloves on Halloween night

November 3: 3 gifts that start with N

  1. sewing pal Neighbor
  2. Nighttime
  3. November

November 4: a gift gathered, given, good

  1. food bank donation (1. Gathered–food; 2. Given–money; 3. Good–good food, not stuff in the back of my cupboard that I won’t ever eat.)

Give Thanks Project

Every year we create a project to “give thanks” in November. Not that we aren’t thankful all year long. But, November is a good time to reflect and be mindful of what we have before the “I wants” of the holiday season begin.

thanksgiving

Using small gifts bags, decorate with stickers, bling and ribbon. (“Be Thankful” stickers and coordinating “Give Thanks” banner from Michael’s.)

thanksgiving

Hang in a prominent area of your home. If I had a fireplace these would be hung on the hearth. Instead, we hung this in the dining room where the kids usually hang their artwork from school.

thanksgiving

Cut leaf shapes from cardstock in autumn colors. Every day in the month of November write something you are thankful for. The autumn moon, the warm weather, Grandma coming to visit…there is so much to be thankful for.

thanksgiving

Shhhh, don’t tell anyone what you wrote. Then, put the “thankful leaves” in your bag. On Thanksgiving open your bag and read out loud all that you were thankful for this month.

November Joy

november joyIn my email inbox was a post from Women Who Believe:

Joy.  Nehemiah 8:10 suggests that the “joy of the Lord is our strength”.  Strength is what we need to get us through these cold days of winter, with our lives often swinging back and forth between the brightness of sunshine and the dredge of those storms we know far too well.”

These women of faith are looking at November as a season of reflection and joy.

This got me thinking about “joy” and what it really means in my life.

But first I have to ask: What exactly is Joy?

Joy (v) to experience great pleasure or delight. [rejoice]

I am not one of those people who are happy and joyful all the time (you know the kind of people I am talking about). I envy those people because I have to search out joy. I need to actively look for it. I don’t walk around being a grouch either. But, sometimes it is hard to find true joy. Sometimes the “storms” in my head get in the way.

The other night the girls were play-wrestling around on the living room floor.

Oddly, this was pure joy to watch. This is not normal behavior. Normally, these two sisters are fighting; saying nasty and hurtful things to one another. That always breaks my heart.

But this night they were wrestling and giggling. They were laughing so hard they were almost crying. It was all play-wrestling. No one got hurt…until Daddy got involved in the playing. Then the joy was over.

It was a joy to watch my girls playing together and laughing the way sisters should.

So, what’s your joy? Keep your eyes open the month of November. You never know when you may experience pure joy.
